Now if my mom were to call me on a Sunday, maybe perhaps I wouldn't have to change the subject. Because recently I discovered that on Sundays from 12pm-3pm, Crocodile Lounge has free omelettes (in addition to free pizza) with any $5 Mimosa or Bloody Mary, in addition to free pizza with every drink. So come Sunday if you wake up in the mood for an omelette and a brunch-like drink, without the cost of brunch, then you at least know one spot where you can satisfy that craving.
"Once in a while I'll order an omelet, 'cause I'm not very good at making omelets." --Cheryl Hines3/21/2014 So my mom and I try to touch base with each other 2-3 times a week. We used to call each other almost every day, but then my schedule got hectic and with the differences in our schedules, we don't get to talk as often as we'd like. But one thing that hasn't changed about our calls is this -- every time we get on the phone with each other, the first thing she'll ask me is if I've had breakfast. And she gets mad when I tell her I didn't, so sometimes I try to change the subject real quick in hopes that she won't notice. Other times I'll tell her I'll eat once we get off the phone. And other times...well we won't talk about those other times.

I can't even begin to count the number of times I've gone out with friends for a couple of drinks and have come down with a serious case of the drunchies, which can be annoying if I'm at one of my favorite spots that doesn't serve grub. And I know I can't be the only one who's ever had that problem. And we all know how annoying that can be.
Well here's a bar where you won't ever have to worry about that problem -- Alligator Lounge in Brooklyn. With every drink purchased, you get a free personal pan pizza. I kid you not. Artichoke Pizza it is not, but it's not a bad deal. And for those of you may not be beer drinkers like myself, but like a good cider -- try the Spiced Cider. It's amazing!! "Life's meant to be sweet! Grab a cupcake and enjoy the ride!" --Kimmie Easley, Souls Set Free1/8/2014 Happy New Year loves! So I know it's been a while since I shared some of my fabulous knowledge and I do apologize -- right after finals, I took a week to just chillax and recoup from a stressful semester (worst one to date). Then had to deal with the passing of a family member, which was quite difficult. Not exactly how one wants to spend the holidays, but it happens. And with the chaos known as the months of November and December, I have been so stressed and worn out that it finally caught up to me, that I spent the first week of January just recovering from it all. Plus I started a new job, so there's also that to consider. But no biggie -- nothing a good cupcake couldn't fix.
And speaking of cupcakes...have I ever told you how much I love a good cupcake? It's like cake, but in cup form. Hence the name -- cupcake. And what's the best kind of cupcake? A FREE cupcake of course. And how does one go about getting a cupcake for free? By following Georgetown Cupcakes on Twitter. Every morning, Georgetown Cupcake in SoHo tweets their free, not-on-menu, flavor of the day. And all you have to do is be one of the first 100 people to order it in store, and it's yours absolutely free. 100 cupcakes at the store, 1 per customer. That's it. Simple enough, isn't it? And when you get that free cupcake, you can thank me by buying me a cupcake. "'It Girl' is such a weird term. It implies I go to parties and drink champagne." -- Carey Mulligan11/6/2013 So I have been SERIOUSLY neglecting A lotus and some... all semester long. Don't blame me -- blame the pressures of grad school. Luckily though, I met with my academic advisor yesterday to plan out my schedule for next semester, and it turns out I should have a little bit more free time on my hands to keep up with this lovely project of mine. I'll drink to that.
And speaking of drinking, anyone who is looking for something to do from 5:30-7:00 pm TODAY, November 6th, is just in luck. The bar at David Burke at Bloomingdale's on 3rd Avenue is having a complimentary tasting of FREE Laurent Perrier Champagne to celebrate the newest addition to their wine collection. There'll also be passed hors d'oeuvres. Normally I'd go, but I have something called a job that I have to go to. Plus as part of my healthier living kick I've been on these past few months, I've pretty much been trying to limit my drinking to the weekends since I promised myself I'd be more svelte by the time graduation rolls up in May. That.... PLUS...the last time I went to one of these things, after 3 free overflowing glasses of wine and champagne at a handbag party at Saks Fifth Avenue, I ended up being "impulsive" and bought a pair of $500 Cartier Sunglasses. Yes I still do have those sunglasses. Yes I still wear them. No I don't feel like being that impulsive again...at least not for another 10 months or so. So go be an "It Girl" for the both of us and drink plenty of champagne for me as well. After the hardest day, sometimes, more than a glass of wine, all a girl really wants is a cookie. A nice soft warm gooey cookie. Takes you back to the days of when all you needed was a cookie to make everything all better. One of my favorite ways of ending a long day is by eating a warm chocolate chip cookie with a scoop of ice cream. Of course I don't do this all the time because it's one of those things I like to reserve to those days that really call for it, because let's face it -- eating too many cookies are not good for you.
But once in a while, comes along a day when eating cookies is totally acceptable. When eating a cookie is considered a good deed for others. Tomorrow, October 5th, from 10 am-4pm at the City Reliquary is the 4th Annual Sugar Sweet Festival, where New York's bakers, sweet-makers and treat-lovers are celebrated and a proceeds from an all-donation bake sale go to raising money for The CIty Reliquary. So why not be selfless, help someone who needs it, and eat a cookie tomorrow? Eating cookies in the name of charity? Hey that's good enough for me! So I have a birthday coming up, and my inbox has been getting hit with lots of special offers and free things. This is why I love the last week of September/first week of October. Because I've got my friends at various vendors e-mailing me to invite me to come visit and get something free. There's a FREE bottle of champagne with my name on it waiting for me at Kellari Taverna (they also do the same thing when your anniversary and Greek nameday are coming up). There's a FREE food/drink reward waiting for me at Starbucks. A FREE chocolate martini at Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar. FREE ice cream from Baskin-Robbins. And this is only some of the offers I've received. The list goes on. I know in the past I've gotten discounts from various retailers as well, such as Victoria's Secret and The Limited. So seriously --- get out there and enjoy your birthday.
And of course after all these freebies, I'm going to need a free membership at the gym to erase the evidence that I had a birthday. And as for me being old? Pssssshhhhh. Never gonna happen. At least not mentally. So it's been 2 weeks since I last posted, so to make up it up to you -- this post has got something special for y'all. But you've got to read very carefully.
So I'm one of those people that likes putting costumes on dogs. Not because I think it's cute. But rather because I think it's HILARIOUS. Bahahahaha yeah I know -- I'm messed up. Oh well. While the first three pics in the gallery above are results of a Google search for dogs in costumes, the last picture is of my favorite golden retriever, Sam (his owner was my roommate in Boston). When his owner asked me if Sam could come live with us, I agreed but on one condition -- she had to let me put a costume on him. And without any hesitation she agreed. I really wanted to put a lobster costume on him, because I honestly think there could not be a much funnier sight than seeing a golden retriever dressed as a lobster. But sadly I could not find one in time for Halloween. So therefore, poor buddy (but much to my amusement), he got to dress up as the one thing he loved chasing after -- a squirrel!!!! Then after the thought of a golden retriever dressed as a lobster, my next food costume choice for a dog would be...and this is definitely so cliche...but it would be a dachshund dressed as a hot dog. Bahahahahaha. Now I'm not saying that dogs dressed as food are the funniest thing ever. I actually love seeing the dog in a Yoda costume more. But a dachshund dressed as a hot dog is pretty up there on my list of funniest dog costumes. And speaking of hot dogs, those used to be another staple food for me. Loved eating them. But since I became a born-again vegetarian a couple months back, I can't say that I've missed them. However, I know there are plenty of people out there who love their hot dogs. And for those people -- this is the post you really want to pay attention to. Because here's what I'm about to tell you: Every Wednesday at Spring Lounge, they're giving out FREE hot dogs starting at 5 p.m. until they're gone. And apparently these hot dogs are cooked in the Spring Lounge's favorite beer selection of the week. And for those of you who are not into Hot Dogs, well what about a FREE Bagel Brunch...ehhh?????? That's right -- because I neglected A lotus and some... for 2 weeks, I've decided to make up for it by giving you 2 free deals in one post. So getting back to this Bagel Brunch -- every Sunday starting at 12 noon, you can get a free bagel w/ fixins', while supplies last. So there you go. Grab some free food at the bar, and then use the money you saved to tip your bartender! Donuts. Who does't love a good donut? I mean seriously. The best part of my Sundays (food-wise) is eating a donut at church (unless we actually have food food. Then who cares about a donut those days?!? We've got food!!!!!!)
I love 'em glazed. I love 'em filled. I love 'em frosted. I love 'em with coffee. I love dipping 'em in my coffee. If you haven't gotten the point -- I love eating my donuts. I really do. Even though they're not the greatest thing for you, but that's a whole different story. Now I grew up with Dunkin' Donuts, so those will probably be my favorite 'til the day I die...or until I finally can get my hands on a cronut. Then my food tastes will probably get all bougie, although The Food Emporium at Union Square does sell creme-filled croissant donuts. What if I told you that you could get a FREE DOZEN DONUTS from Krispy Kreme? And this is not just a New York deal either. September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day. So on that day, you walk into a participating Krispy Kreme location, and you talk like a pirate, you get one FREE Original Glazed Doughnuts. If you walk in dressed like a pirate wearing at least 3 things on their list of things that a pirate wears, you get a FREE dozen of Original Glazed Doughnuts. It's that simple. You just have to be willing to have no shame for a few minutes. It's like what would you do for a Klondike Bar? But substitute Klondike Bar with Krispy Kreme Doughnut. So Blow Me Down! And get yourself some free donuts!! In "Ask now what you can do for your country. Ask what's for lunch?", I mentioned how I used to hate trying new foods. That I stuck mostly to chicken fingers and french fries. Well I forgot to mention that I also had a special soft spot for a good cheeseburger. Never really cared for french fries with my burger (unless they were sweet potato fries), but the actual burger itself -- always hit the spot for me. Never disappointed me. And now that I've converted to a vegetarian, I've grown to love veggie burgers and tofu burgers.
Now there are people out there who think all burgers are the same. Those people obviously have never had a good burger. And i pity them. They don't know what they're missing out on. Doesn't matter if it's a beef burger, a turkey burger, a veggie burger, or a tofu burger. Sometimes, a good burger is all it takes. Then there are people like me, who know that a good burger is hard to come by because no two burgers are the same. Just like not all brown people look alike and I should not be going around hugging random people thinking they are someone else. Not that I've done that before or anything... MOVING ON... So yeah -- good burger joints, I feel, are coming harder to come by these days. Most joints I feel are hit or miss. You either hate it or you love it. And I've def been to my share of "miss"-es But one establishment that I could definitely see myself returning to in the future would be Mark, the slider bar on St. Mark's Place between 2nd & 3rd Aves, where sliders range from $2.75 - $5.75. And for $8 -- you can get their lunch special which includes 2 sliders, fries and a soda. Not a bad deal. And for people like me, they do have veggie sliders. They also have turkey sliders and pork sliders, for those who don't eat red meat. And honestly speaking -- I just ate at this joint a little over 4 hours ago and I'm still full. So maybe I won't be going back today. But my money and I will def be going back. So first of all, I just want to apologize for the way these pictures uploaded. For some reason, these pictures did not upload in their upright positions (except for maybe one or two), and I have no idea on how to set it right.
MOVING ON.... I used to be one of those kids who never enjoyed trying anything new. Or more like afraid to try anything new. Every time we would go out, I would always order the same thing -- chicken fingers & french fries. It was safe. I knew what to expect. Never any room for disappointment. Or if we went to Chinese, tbeef fried rice and General Tso's Chicken. Indian -- bhiriyani of some sort. You get the point. I was always afraid to try something new. Then one day, and I don't know when this was or how it happened, but something changed, and I realized I couldn't go spending the rest of my life afraid to try new things. So slowly I started opening myself to trying new things. And before you knew it, I became a total foodie -- always wanting to try new restaurants, new cuisines. I spent the latter part of last week moving from NYC's East Village to Greenwich Village. Moving built up quite an appetite, especially since I did the move entirely by myself (not that I'm complaining -- I'm actually proud of myself for doing so). So I was glad when one of my girlfriends from school asked me to make the quick trek into Brooklyn (3 subway stops away on the L train) to check out and grab some food at Smorgasburg. I set off with $20 in cash in my wallet to meet her at a foodie's idea of heaven. And that $20 proved plenty enough. My friend (who was a good sport about my desire for vegetarian options) and I pretty much pooled our money together and shared everything that we got -- a chocolate chunk salted oats cookie, scallion pancakes, parathas stuffed with goat cheese, pecans, dates & honey, sweet potato Bombay sandwiches, and the list goes on. I definitely felt like I ate more than my money's worth and did not at all feel guilty about it. And not just because I spent 3 days moving and setting up my new place, but because my friend made me walk back from Brooklyn with her via the Williamsburg Bridge. As for what my favorite thing was that day -- I couldn't really tell you. But if I had to pick, I would have to say it's a toss up between the paratha from Parantha Alley or the Sweet Potato Bombay Sandwich from Bombay Sandwich Co. But that could be the brown child from within speaking. |
