So going back to drag queens -- the best type of diva out there. And these divas sure do love their fun and games, especially when it comes to Bingo. Now I've been to Bitchy Bingo at Lips, which has definitely proven to be a good time for a Wednesday, and it was definitely an entertaining time. But for those of us who can't make it out to a Bingo game on Wednesdays, on Saturday nights from 7:30pm - 9:30pm, Le Poisson Rouge hosts Le Bingo!, where admission is FREE and each card is $2. With an array of prizes to win from, ranging from discount-store delights to a cash jackpot, and drag queens, this is not your granny's typical Bingo game. Makes for a good time whether it's with your girlfriends for a night out on the town, or if you're just looking to do something by yourself.
I've always admired drag queens. When you think about it, they are the most courageous divas out there because they're doing their thing with the whole "I don't give a $@#!" attitude that I wish girls everywhere sometimes had. Now I'm not saying it's ok to be totally rude, totally obnoxious or totally self-absorbed. But a girl should be confident to do her own thing and be her own person, without worrying about how others are going to perceive her. (Now if only I would follow my own advice, because for years, the one things I've been struggling with is trying to do the right thing for myself vs. trying to do the right thing for everyone else. But this isn't about me...well ok maybe it is just a little...and we can psychoanalyze me at another time in another venue.)

First of all, does anyone else NOT know who Maria Sharapova is? Since I was never a tennis fan, I'm not afraid to admit that I didn't know who she was. Then I googled her, to find out that she's a tennis player who has been ranked as Number 3 by the Women's Tennis Association. Quite impressive. You learn something new every day. Or at least I do.
Now I may not understand Ms. Sharapova's game, but I do understand her idea of fun. And she sounds like my kind of girl -- the type who knows how to appreciate having a good time with your friends for free (or cheap). So I'm sure she must know about Goldstar, a website that helps people to get out more to live entertainment (like theater, comedy, and sports) and events (such as wine tastings, sushi making classes and rodeos). When you sign up for a free account with Goldstar, the site and e-mails you receive from Goldstar are customized with fun and different things to do based on your preferences. You can get COMP to Half-Priced tickets (plus a small service fee) for different events. Goldstar's been reviewed by some pretty influential sources of media, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and Forbes Magazine. And one of the best things about Goldstar -- it's not just a NYC thing. So you can also take a look at tickets for events in other U.S. cities. But yeah -- next time you're looking for something cheap and fun to do with your friends, take a look at what's available on Goldstar. You'd be surprised by what you may find. As for me -- I'm about to purchase a ticket to see The Eight: Reindeer Monologues. So I have a birthday coming up, and my inbox has been getting hit with lots of special offers and free things. This is why I love the last week of September/first week of October. Because I've got my friends at various vendors e-mailing me to invite me to come visit and get something free. There's a FREE bottle of champagne with my name on it waiting for me at Kellari Taverna (they also do the same thing when your anniversary and Greek nameday are coming up). There's a FREE food/drink reward waiting for me at Starbucks. A FREE chocolate martini at Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar. FREE ice cream from Baskin-Robbins. And this is only some of the offers I've received. The list goes on. I know in the past I've gotten discounts from various retailers as well, such as Victoria's Secret and The Limited. So seriously --- get out there and enjoy your birthday.
And of course after all these freebies, I'm going to need a free membership at the gym to erase the evidence that I had a birthday. And as for me being old? Pssssshhhhh. Never gonna happen. At least not mentally. So every now and then, in the game of life, a curveball is thrown at you and it's all about how you play the game. So guess what folks -- this time I'm the pitcher and you're the batter and I'm throwing you my curveball -- instead of giving you a post about something you can do for free or cheap, I'm giving you a post about a free event I attended last weekend. And I'm sorry that I couldn't fill you in on it so you could attend as well, but honestly -- I found out about this event maybe a couple of hours before I went to it, but just didn't have the time to post about it.
Last week, my lovely former roommate and I attended the grand opening for Vanity Projects -- a nail salon that specializes in nail art, where there was free wine, champagne and Perrier to sip on, free yummies from Luckybird Bakery to munch on, and free mini-manicures. Now anyone who knows me know that I usually like to keep my manicures simple because of the fact that if they chip, it's not really noticeable. But seeing how nail art has been all the trend now for a while, and seeing how it was free, I just had to indulge. So we put our names on a list and were originally told it would be a 3 hour wait (yes that's how many people showed up to this soiree) before we could have our nails done. Luckily for us, a good number of people left that we were able to get our nails done by Mr. Luis before the 3 hours were up. While the talented and fabulous Mr. Luis did some random designs for Mel, he gave me peacock feathers on my ring fingers. And since he found me so charming (and also because he saw that I had some henna stains on my nails from my friend's wedding the week before), he decided to bend the rules for me and paint the rest of my nails to give it a more cleaner look. And this is why I say people need to be more engaging and more friendly. It really does pay off to be nice sometimes. And although the designs are still pretty fresh looking on my ring fingers, as usual, the rest of my manicure has chipped. So now I must go paint my own nails until I can afford to go back to get another awesome design from Mr. Luis. So I used to be one of the most disorganized people ever. No joke. I would constantly be losing things and constantly forgetting about appointments. It got to be more annoying than anything else. Then something happened and I slowly became one of those people who needed order in her life. I mean, don't get me wrong -- I'm no Monica Geller. But, yeah, I like keeping my life organized. It helps me stay on top of my game. Never a forgotten appointment. And most of the time, I can locate what I'm looking for.
But when it comes to having to organize things involving other people, it gets to be difficult. It's hard to plan meetups and hangouts with friends when our schedules are entirely different. Not everyone is on board with doing a group chat of some sort. Not everyone has group texting options. Not everyone does "Reply All" or understand the need for a specific email thread to talk about something specific. Which irks someone like me when trying to stay organized. But luckily, one of my colleagues from school introduced me to Doodle, which makes scheduling a meeting so much easier. The organizer just sends out an e-mail invite to participants and everyone enters in their availability for a given time frame. Makes trying to plan things with other people so much easier, so that there can be time for a crisis intervention if need be. "Fashion is only the attempt to realize art in living forms and social intercourse." - Francis Bacon8/20/2013 I absolutely love this video from "Curb Your Enthusiasm". It gets me every single time. I mean EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. "The Fashion!!!!!" "Dorothy!!!!!" Bahahahahahaha I could watch this video a million times and never get tired of it. It's how I feel about Jeff Dunham and his ventriloquist act, especially with Peanut and Jose Jalapeno...on a stick. Never gets old for me.
I love fashion. For me, I refer to my fashion magazines as my porn. It's my guilty pleasure. And since I'm brown, I also try and keep up with the Indian fashion as well. I have so many clothes, it's not even funny how many closets full of clothes I had (ok still have) at my parents' (even though I don't live with them anymore). In addition to my huge loft-like walk-in closet for my regular clothes and shoes, I have a separate closet just for my non-sari Indian clothes, and one whole side of my mother's sari closet for myself. I love the fabrics, the colors, the patterns. LOVE IT ALL!!!! Then let's not forget my love of shoes and jewelry. But of course with my grad student status, my love of fashion is one thing I had to put on hold. I feel a person's individual style sense is their chance to really express themselves without the usage of words. Fashion is art. And I love art. For me, fashion is the perfect middle ground between performing arts and the art you see at a gallery. And speaking of fashion being art, this Sunday, August 25th, from 6pm - 8pm is the Lower East Side Opening Night: Art + Fashion, where art lovers and fashionistas come together for one huge block party. Over 40 galleries will open their doors, and there'll be music (both live and a DJ) and a runway show amongst the festivities. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend since I have a prior commitment. But like I've said before, if you want good karma, you have to practice good karma. So just because I can't go, doesn't mean I can't share the knowledge and wish one of you to go. And I really hope one of you go so I can live vicariously through you and hear all about the amazingness that is the LES Opening Night. Now I'm not exactly a Ke$ha fan, but I'm not afraid to admit -- I actually do like the song. Many a times I have had so much fun dancing up a storm to this song at my local watering hole. But that's besides the point.
Whatever. Moving on... So the weekend is upon us, and I recently discovered the wonderful world of Sōsh. And when I say recently, I mean like sometime this week recently. Heck, I've been engaged in so many different projects this week between my internship, my freelancing, and my own personal life projects, I wouldn't even be surprised if it was yesterday (because I definitely know it wasn't today). But that's besides the point. Sōsh is a new way at having a "social" life by "reinventing the way people discover the world around them" (I don't believe in plagiarism so that's directly quoted from the Sōsh website). It's a website that's dedicated to helping you find and plan activities in your city so that you don't have to waste time trying to find something to do. Which is really ironic, because you can easily waste an hour just sitting and playing around on Sōsh. So how does it work? You build a profile (for lazy people like myself when it comes to filling out forms, you can just create a profile using your Facebook details). You fill in what your favorite neighborhoods are, what you love about your city, and the types of activities you want to try. You get recommendations based on your preferences for fun and unique activities to try. You can bookmark and share your favorites. If I understand the gist of it, it's like Pinterest, which interestingly enough, I have NOT gotten into. I kind of like the concept of Sōsh because it helps making things easier when trying to make plans with friends and we're tired of doing the same old thing and going to the same old place. Right now Sōsh is only available for San Francisco and New York, with plans to add Boston, Chicago and LA soon. So check it out . If you like it -- awesome. If it's not your thing, then that's fine too. And who knows -- maybe you'll find your big weekend plans on here. As for me, I'll be hitting up a wedding this weekend -- Congratulations Maurice & Yoko!! So I highly doubt I will be doing anything on my Sōsh lists. All pictures taken by Emma Cleary of Emma Cleary Photography I've always loved photography. I think a good photographer can say so many things through one picture, and I had always wanted to get professional pictures taken by a photographer. Not because I wanted to break out into modeling or because I love looking at myself (I actually hate looking at pictures of myself). I just wanted to get some professional pictures taken. Plus, and as morbid as this is going to sound, in case I should die within 5 years of having these pictures taken, I wanted to make sure my parents had a better picture than my high school senior portrait to hang next to my deceased grandparents' pictures.
